A modern Indian home carries Indian intelligence, not Indian ornament, climate logic, the courtyard, filtered light, regional material and living craft, expressed in clean contemporary lines. The goal is a home that clearly belongs to this place and this century, and to no catalogue.

The thesis
Indian intelligence, not Indian ornament.
There are two easy ways to design an Indian home badly. One copies a Western modern house and drops it onto an Indian plot, ignoring the sun and the season until the air-conditioning takes over. The other reaches for exotica, arches, carved brackets and brass bolted on as decoration to signal heritage. Both miss the point. India's building tradition was never mainly about ornament. It was about intelligence.
That intelligence is climatic and social. Orient the house to the sun and wind. Put an open lung at its centre. Filter harsh light through screens. Build with what the region makes and the local craftsperson knows. Shape spaces around how a family actually gathers, cooks and hosts. Do those things and the ornament becomes optional, because the home already has depth.
Our design language takes that reasoning and expresses it in a clean, contemporary form. It is the through-line in everything the studio builds, and it is the long project we are most serious about, putting a contemporary Indian architecture on the map as a considered style, not a curiosity.

Orientation, shade and cross-ventilation set the form before anything else.

A courtyard or light court that gives the plan air, daylight and calm.

Jaali and screens that ventilate, screen and pattern the sun.

Regional stone, lime, terrazzo, timber and handmade tile, left to be themselves.
- Living craft
Metalwork, joinery and finishes by makers we can name and visit.
- Space for the family
Thresholds, gathering rooms and edges shaped around how Indian homes are lived in.

Sourced close, made by hand, named on the file.
A contemporary Indian home is only as honest as what it is built from. We keep a material library of regional stone, lime and terrazzo finishes, timber, handmade tile and metalwork, and we prefer makers we can visit over anything ordered from a distant catalogue.
- ARegional over imported. Local stone and finishes suit the climate, cut transport, and give the house a material story rooted in its place. We reach for imports only when nothing regional does the job.
- BCraft that still lives. Metal art, joinery and screens made by working craftspeople keep a skill economy alive and give the home detail no factory line reproduces. Our own studio work includes bespoke metal art and partition pieces.
- CAgeing gracefully. Honest materials improve with time. We specify finishes that patinate rather than peel, so the house looks better in ten years, not tired.
The studio

Aalekh is led by Ar. Pooja Kothari, Principal Architect, and the design language on this page carries her signature on every project. In seven years the studio has delivered 27 residential projects, 20 interiors, 4 architecture and 3 delivered remotely for NRI clients, across Bangalore and South India, each reviewed by the founder before it leaves the studio.
Pooja was selected for the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Women programme run with NSRCEL at IIM Bangalore in the 2026 cohort, a marker of how seriously the studio is building its practice. We take on a small number of homes at a time on purpose. A contemporary Indian home is a considered thing, and it deserves a Principal's attention rather than a production line.

What do you mean by contemporary Indian design? +
A modern home that carries Indian intelligence rather than Indian ornament. We take the logic behind traditional building, climate response, the courtyard, filtered light, local material and craft, and express it in a clean contemporary language. No carved arches for effect, no theme-park exotica, just a home that clearly belongs to this place and this century.
Is this a traditional or a modern style? +
Modern in form, Indian in reasoning. The lines are clean and current, but the decisions underneath, orientation, shade, cross-ventilation, the handmade material, come from how India has always built well for its climate. Tradition informs the plan and the palette, it does not dictate the look.
Does contemporary Indian mean lots of ethnic decoration? +
No, and that distinction matters to us. Exotica bolts on jaali, brass and carving as surface decoration. We use those elements only where they do real work, a jaali that ventilates and screens, stone that suits the climate, craft that a regional maker still practises. Meaning over motif, every time.
Where do the materials and craft come from? +
We favour regional and Indian materials and living craft traditions, local stone, lime and terrazzo finishes, timber, handmade tile, metalwork and joinery from makers we can name and visit. Sourcing close to the site cuts transport, supports the craft economy, and gives the home a material honesty imported catalogues cannot.
Can a contemporary Indian home also be vastu-compliant? +
Yes. Our design language and vastu are compatible when a family wants both. Much of vastu is climate and settlement logic that already aligns with how we plan, so we fold a vastu brief into the contemporary design rather than treating them as opposites. Where they conflict we show you the trade-offs and you decide.
Do you design contemporary Indian homes for clients living abroad? +
Yes. Many of our conversations are with families building or returning to Bangalore from abroad. We run the whole design over video, share 3D walkthroughs before any spend, and can courier material samples overseas so you judge the palette in your own hands.
