Climate-responsive homes for Bangalore's weather.

Bangalore has one of the kindest climates any city gets. Design for it and you barely need air-conditioning for most of the year. We plan homes around orientation, cross-ventilation, thermal mass and rainwater, so comfort comes from the building itself, not from a running electricity bill.

The Bangalore advantage

A plateau climate most cities would envy.

Bangalore sits high on the Deccan plateau, which gives it mild days, cool nights and a long comfortable stretch either side of the monsoon. That is a gift most Indian cities do not have. Yet a lot of new construction throws it away, glass on the west, sealed rooms, dark cores, and then leans on air-conditioning to fix what the design created.

We design the other way round. Get the passive decisions right first, orientation, shade, air movement, mass, and the house does most of the comfort work on its own. Air-conditioning becomes a backup for a few peak afternoons or one bedroom on the hottest nights, not the thing holding the house together.

None of this is exotic or costly. It is a set of choices made at the sketch stage, when they are still free to make.

The four levers

  • Orientation and shading

    Turn habitable rooms away from the harsh west; shade east and west glass.

  • Cross-ventilation

    Openings on opposite walls so the prevailing breeze moves through.

  • Thermal mass and roof

    Heavier walls and an insulated or reflective roof slow the heat gain.

  • Rainwater and greenery

    Harvesting, planting and shade trees cool the site and recharge groundwater.

  • Deep overhangs

    Chajjas and verandahs keep sun off walls and rain off open windows.

  • Night ventilation

    Flush the day's heat out overnight while the plateau air is cool.

The local specifics

Designed for this city, not a generic tropics.

Bangalore has its own quirks, and they change the design. We work them into the plan rather than treating the city as an interchangeable hot place.

  • AThe west sun is the enemy, not the heat overall. Peak discomfort here comes from low afternoon sun striking west walls and glass. We pull bedrooms and living off the west face, or shield it with a service buffer, deep overhang or jaali.
  • BCool nights are an asset to use. Unlike the coast, Bangalore cools down after dark most of the year. We design for night flush ventilation so the structure sheds heat overnight, which the humid coastal cities cannot rely on.
  • CIntense but seasonal rain. The monsoon arrives hard. Deep overhangs let you keep windows open through a downpour, and we route roof and surface water into a harvesting sump, which also eases the tanker dependence common across the city.

Common questions on climate-responsive design.

Can a Bangalore home really work without air-conditioning? +

For most of the year, yes. Bangalore sits on a plateau with mild temperatures and cool nights for much of the calendar. Get orientation, shading and cross-ventilation right and a well-designed home stays comfortable without AC for the majority of the year, with cooling reserved for a few peak weeks or a single room.

What matters most for a cool house in Bangalore? +

Orientation and shading come first, keep the harsh west and low afternoon sun off the glass and walls. Then cross-ventilation, openings on opposite sides so breeze moves through. Then thermal mass and roof insulation to slow heat gain. These cost little at design stage and pay back every day the house is lived in.

Is climate-responsive design the same as an expensive green-rated home? +

No. Certification and gadgets are optional. The core of climate-responsive design is free, it is decisions about where the house faces, where windows sit, how the roof is built and where shade falls. Made at sketch stage these cost nothing extra and do most of the work a bolted-on system would.

How do you handle the Bangalore monsoon in the design? +

Deep overhangs and verandahs keep rain off walls and open windows so you can ventilate through a downpour. We size gutters and drains for peak intensity, slope paving away from the house, and route roof and surface water into a rainwater harvesting sump to recharge groundwater and cut dependence on tankers.

Does thermal mass make sense in Bangalore's climate? +

Yes, because Bangalore has a strong day-to-night temperature swing. Heavier walls and floors absorb daytime heat and release it after dark when the air has cooled, flattening the peaks. We pair mass with night ventilation so the structure sheds its heat overnight and starts the next day cool.

Can you make an existing house more climate-responsive? +

Often meaningfully. We can add external shading and overhangs, insulate or reflect the roof, open up cross-ventilation, plant for shade on the west, and add rainwater harvesting. Orientation is fixed once built, but shading and ventilation retrofits alone can make a hot house noticeably more comfortable.
